Meet the Joiner

Tom O'Brien

An old dog learning new tricks

I spent most of my adult life living in Rhode Island and working as a carpenter and woodworker primarily in my own company. Though I am at an age when many consider retirement, that is not something that appeals to me. Instead, my wife, Barbara and I decided to move to the Green Mountains, which we have long loved, and begin a new chapter here.

The owner of Jamaiaca Joinery and his wife before our shop under construction

We began by building an addition to our almost tiny house to give us room for company and a space for a workshop (which you can see under construction behind us in this photo). Though there seems always more to do, this house is now more complete than any of our prior homes and the shop is up and running.

As I worked on the interior of our new home, I began to experiment with new approaches to constructing the cabinetry which we designed to handle much of our storage as we have no basement or attic. Relieved of the daily pressures of running a business, I have been able to make progress developing ideas that have been in the back of my head for decades.

The result is Jamaica Joinery where I am offering some of my new approaches to woodworking to any who are interested. If you explore this site, you will see that I have a number of irons in the fire. What will eventually become of Jamaica Joinery is now up to you, friends and neighbors, clients and strangers. Where your needs and desires intersect with my skills and vision is the place where Jamaica Joinery will grow.
